How To Build A Professional Pond And Waterfall

Who wouldn’t want to invest in a water feature that will last for decades? If you are going to spend several thousand dollars on a waterfall and pond, don’t you want it to be trouble free and add equity to your home? If so, then you do not want to cut corners by using a rubber liner, along with the accompanying cheap plastic biofalls, filter, skimmer and energy wasting sump pumps.

I have been building concrete and rebar reinforced rock waterfalls and ponds for over 25 years and have never had one crack or leak. Hundreds of “do-it-yourselfers” have professionally constructed their own water features with the help of my Construction Manual, and they will never have to worry about the high cost of maintenance that is a given when using a pond liner.

Pond liner contractors boast that their liners have twenty to thirty year warranties, depending on the manufacturer of the liner itself. What they don’t tell you is that the liner is warranted against factory defects only. They won’t tell you that twenty to thirty percent of ponds built with liners leak within the first year from causes such as rats, mice, ground squirrels, gophers, chipmunks, woodchucks, tree roots, stretching and punctures from heavy rocks placed on the liners, not to mention dogs, raccoons, and many other animals. The list goes on.

In addition, unlike the rocks that are secured with mortar in concrete constructions, pond liners are covered with loose rock, including the construction of the waterfall. Consequently, it presents a hazard for both children and adults who attempt to climb on the rocks. The loose rocks placed around the pond’s edge and in the waterfall attract burrowing rodents, snakes and other animals. Because the rocks are not well-secured with mortar, as in concrete construction, they can easily shift and reveal the unsightly liner underneath.

Liner ponds utilize gravity filters that require frequent cleaning; and this is a hard, messy and stinky job. Liner ponds also utilize sump pumps to circulate the water. Sump pumps use sixty percent more energy than the centrifugal pumps that are used in concrete construction and are normally installed close to the edge of the pond. Consequently, they do not properly circulate the water, so all the fish waste and debris ends up collecting and rotting on the bottom, causing serious problems to the aquatic life. In addition, sump pumps have a short life span and most have only one or two-year warranties.

With concrete construction, two anti-vortex drains are installed in the center of the pond; so fish waste and other particulates gravitate to the drains and are sucked up and collected in a pressurized bead filter. This type of filter only requires the turning of a handle once or twice a week to back-flush the water, which insures a clean, crystal-clear pond.

Concrete ponds use professional pool skimmers to remove leaves and debris before it has a chance to waterlog and settle to the bottom. Concrete construction costs only twenty percent more than liner ponds and they will last for decades. With the proper instructions, any “do-it-yourselfer” can build their own water feature by hiring professional subcontractors and ordering their own concrete company and rebar installers.

In as little as one to two weeks, you can have a pond and waterfall that will last for decades and cost only twenty percent more than a leak-prone rubber liner pond. Plus, you will experience a nearly maintenance-free water feature.

An Overview of How Home Builders Build a House

Building your own house can be an exciting, but the amount of time it takes can make anyone feel impatient or anxious. You are probably ready to move in and want the house built as soon as possible. However, it’s important to be patient. Home builders do an immense amount of work on each house they build, and it’s better for them to be thorough and precise than to do a rushed job and make a mistake that will cost you money to repair later.

The first thing the crew of home builders must do is prepare the building site. Some crews will hire subcontractors to do this work, whereas others will do the work themselves. This involves using a bulldozer and backhoe to clear the lot of rocks, trees, and other debris. Next, they will dig a hole for the basement, put in wooden frames to serve as a template for the foundation. Once they’ve done that, they will pour cement into the holes and trenches to create the foundation, which must then be inspected by a city inspector.

Once the foundation and basement are finished, the home builders will erect the “skeleton” of the house. This term is used to refer to the floors, walls, and roof. While the skeleton is being built, the crew will cover the entire structure with a protective barrier known as a house wrap whenever they are not working. This will help keep moisture out and prevent the wood from rotting.

After the skeleton has been constructed, the crew will install the roofing and siding materials to the exterior of the house. While this is going on, plumbing, HVAC, and electrical contractors will also work to install pipes and ventilation in the walls of the house. This includes putting in sewer lines, ductwork, bathtubs and toilets, water supply lines, insulation, and the furnace. The electrician will also install outlets and phone jacks at this time. After these installations are complete, city inspectors will once again inspect the house to make sure the electrical and plumbing systems comply with local and state building codes.

After the wiring, ventilation, and plumbing systems are in place, home builders will work to put the finishing touches on the house. This includes hanging the drywall and applying paint to the interior walls, as well as putting up exterior finishes such as brick, stucco, or siding. The crew will also add decorative trim such as baseboards, lay down the flooring, and install cabinets, light fixtures, mirrors, and bathroom vanities. Once this is done, the crew will do a final cleanup and the city inspectors will return for a final inspection. Following the last inspection, the house will finally be ready for you and your family to move in!

Building A Sick Day Kit

College students really have the life. For five days a week, they get up, go to class for a few hours and then usually come home and just hang out or nap. The responsibility required to do everything you need to get done at college is slim to nil, but what happens when the undergrad needs to take care of himself or herself? What happens when college students get sick?

Usually, a college kid will just stay in bed until they feel better, but that isnt exactly the best way to deal with sickness. For that, you need a sick day first aid kit. Now a sick day kit is no ordinary box of health care supplies it is a kit that needs to be loaded to the brim with the best medicine and tools available to deal with a whiny college student.

To start, definitely get a normal first aid kit with all of fixings like bandages, ointments and other such amenities. These are always useful around the dorm as it is and may be of use to you on a sick day. Heres what you need to add to be prepared for the next time you cant even move out of bed:

– Benadryl Benadryl will be great if you have rashes or any kind of allergic reaction or swelling. If you feel fine, you dont want to be walking around with a huge lip or rash on your arm, so take some of this.
– Dramamine Really helpful if you cant stop vomiting. Youre going to need this if you pick up any of the normal college stomach viruses.
– Tylenol or Advil If youve been coughing all night, your head is going to kill in the morning, so have some of this around.

In worst case scenarios, you could have a daytime style medicine to try and make it through the day with that nasty cough, but why bother? Always remember to go to health services or another medical care provider if youre sick, even if you have an awesome sick day kit. They know what theyre doing.

Building A Backdrop For Your Videos

There are dozens of reasons why you might want to build your own movie set. Maybe you have created a YouTube channel and need to create a backdrop in order to please your thousands of subscribers. Or maybe you are working on a school project and the added effort and professionalism could bump your grade up to an A. Whatever the case, do not fear! Building a set is easier than organic chemistry. Okay fine, it is a lot easier than organic chemistry.

First you will need to decide what kind of movie set you will want and or need. A simple backdrop for a video requires limited supplies and little effort, but an interactive set requires quite a bit more work. First The Easy!

A back drop for a video should be a simple affair and dark, solid colors are your best bet. That way you can have notifications and links pop up around you which adds to the video. If you are in a small room and have very limited resources a queen size or larger sheet can work fine. But keep in mind that these will move with the air, and can show wrinkles which will take away from any professionalism you are trying to exude. To make a basic backdrop, you will need to get one by four pieces of wood, white pine works best, glue, staples and a staple gun (or screws and a drill) particle board, and canvas.

A lumber yard should be able to cut down your pieces of wood for you to length. Join the pieces together to make a square and take the particle board that has been cut into squares or, better yet, triangles. Glue or screw the particle board to the one by fours to keep them square, and cut at least two one by fours at forty five degree angles. Wedge them in the corners to brace the frame and make it sturdy. Now stretch the canvas over one edge of the frame and staple the corners. Pull the canvas over the rest of the frame, making sure to get all of the wrinkles out, and staple it along the edges. There should be about an inch of give in the middle of the canvas. Now take a brush and your glue, and generously lather all of the canvas. Let it dry overnight and it will tighten and harden, making the backdrop firm and sturdy.

Before you build, make sure that you have a place to store your back drop since they are virtually impossible to fold and or bend. If you want a big backdrop, but do not have the room to store it, make smaller ones that you can put together. Try making them different colors so you can switch it up in your home movie.

Brad Pitt may not be starring in your movies, but putting in that extra effort to make them seem more professional can go a long way.

Types of Masonry Construction, Characteristics and Common Uses

Types of Masonry Construction, Characteristics And Common Uses

Virtually, all buildings incorporate some type of masonry construction, whether it is a stone or concrete foundation, brick veneer walls, or terra cotta ornamentation. Preservation of these buildings requires a basic understanding of masonry types and their characteristics, technology and construction methodology, proper maintenance and conservation treatments.

Masonry is generally a highly durable form of construction. However, the quality of material used, together with the quality of the mortar and workmanship can strongly affect the durability of the overall masonry construction. Masonry is commonly used for the walls of buildings, retaining walls and monuments. Brick is the most common type of masonry and may be either load bearing or a veneer. Concrete Masonry Units (CMU’s) are made from concrete and are larger than ordinary bricks. CMU walls can be reinforced by filling the block voids with concrete and steel reinforcing bars. Typically, not all voids are filled, but rather those at corners, wall ends, adjacent to window and door openings, which increase wall strength and stability. Placement of steel reinforcement generally results in a CMU walls having much greater lateral and tensile strength than unreinforced walls.

The earliest material to be used was stone. It can be obtained in two ways: from natural outcroppings or scattered deposits, and by the process of quarrying. Most early buildings were constructed of stone readily available near the building site. Early stonemasons also were aware that certain stone types had more -weatherability- – able to withstand the effects of weather better than others – and they utilized each type in accordance with its properties. Stones may be laid up in their natural form, or broken and squared, or shaped, for the proper fit with other stones in the wall.

Quarrying, the industrial process of extracting stone from the earth requires substantial effort and technology. In this process, stone is drilled, blasted, fractured or cut from the quarry face, and then shaped and finished for use in construction.

Concrete masonry units (block and concrete brick are available in sizes, shapes, colors, textures, and profiles for practically every conceivable need and convenience in masonry construction. In addition, concrete masonry units may be used to create attractive patterns and designs to produce an almost unlimited range of architectural treatments of wall surfaces. The following are some more prominent uses:

Exterior load-bearing walls (below and above grade)

Interior load-bearing or non load bearing walls

Fire walls, party walls, curtain walls

Partitions, panel walls, solar screens

Backing for brick, stone, stucco, and other exterior facings

Veneer or nonstructural facing for wood, concrete, or masonry

Fire protection of structural steel members

Firesafe enclosures of stairwells, elevator shafts, storage vaults, or fire hazardous work areas

Piers, pilasters, columns

Bond beams, lintels, sills

Floor and roof systems

Retaining walls, slope protection, ornamental garden walls, and highway sound barriers

Chimneys and fireplaces

Catch basins, manholes, valve vaults

Paving and turf block

Solid brick masonry is made of two or more layers with the units running horizontally (called -stretcher- bricks) bound together with bricks running transverse to the wall (called -header- bricks). Each row of bricks is known as a course. The pattern of headers and stretchers employed gives to different bonds such as the common bond, with every sixth course composed of headers, the English bond, and the Flemish bond, with alternating stretcher and header bricks present on every course. There are no real significant utilitarian differences between most bonds, but the appearance of the finished walls is affected. Brickwork, like unreinforced concrete, has little tensile strength, and works by everything being kept in compression.

There are many brick laying patterns, the following are but a few:

Stack Bond The brick laying patterns described by this term are not structurally sound and are used only for decorative purposes. The stack bond is a run of stretchers with each stretcher stacked centered on the stretcher below it. All joints run vertically down the entire wall.

Running Bond brick laying patterns are a run of stretchers with each stretcher placed in the center of the stretcher below it. This pattern gives a reasonable amount of structural soundness.

English Bond is made up of alternating courses of stretchers and headers. This is the strongest bond for a one-brick thick wall.

Brick Terminology

Bat is a brick cut in half or quarter along the short face

Closer A queen closer is brick cut in half down the long face. They are used in corners of English or Flemish Bond.

Header Brick is laid in a wall, usually connecting two rows of a double wythe wall. The smallest end of the brick is horizontal, aligned with the surface of the wall and exposed to the weather.

Quoins are groups of brick that project slightly from the face of a wall at the corner of a building. The pattern often alternates with several courses projecting bricks, and several courses that are aligned with the wall. The pattern of projecting quoins often alternates with the brickwork on the other side of the corner.

Rowlock is a complete course of brick laid on its side, with the shortest end of the brick exposed and vertical. Commonly used on the top course as a coping for a garden wall.

Sailor Brick are laid on its end with the largest, broad face exposed.

Shiner Brick laid on edge like a sailor, but the broad face is set horizontally.

Soldier Brick often is a complete course of brick laid on end vertically, with the narrow side exposed in the face of the wall.

Wythe is a single vertical wall of brick.

Clay Brick vs. Concrete

The formula for brick making has not changed for hundreds of years. The primary ingredients are clays and shale. It is these ingredients that give natural brick its colors and hue.

The natural color of concrete is gray. In order to give concrete bricks color, additives are necessary to create the variety of colors. Weather and the ultraviolet rays of the sun can cause concrete bricks to fade over time.

Concrete bricks have a tendency to shrink. During the concrete curing process, if the bricks are not properly cured prior to being delivered to the jobsite, shrinking and cracking will appear at the mortar joints and can allow water to enter the wall cavity.

According to a recent survey of architects, designers, engineers, and environmental planners and managers conducted by the Portland Cement Association (PCA), 77 percent chose concrete as a sustainable material. Overall, respondents ranked concrete favorably for its energy efficiency, durability and reduced maintenance. Over 500 individuals participated in the blind survey presented in an Internet survey form by a third party web host.

According to PCA President, -buildings with exterior concrete walls utilize less energy to heat and cool than similarly insulated buildings with wood or steel frame walls-. Additionally, -the superior insulation, air tightness, and mass of the walls can reduce energy for heating and cooling by up to 40%.
